1977 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera***SOLD***

7. May, 2015

Porsche began experimenting with turbocharging technology in their racing program during the late 1960’s and in 1972 began development on a turbocharged version of the 911. Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche who was the head of Porsche at the time, handed development of the program to Ernst Furmann, who was responsible for the development of the turbo technology for the 917/30 race car. Furmann now applied that same technology to the 3.0 liter  engine from the Carrera RS, which was now internally identified as 930. Porsche needed to homologate the turbocharged 911 to comply with the rules to qualify for racing as they had done so with the 1973 Carerra 2.7 RS. On May 5 1976 Porsche qualified  for FIA group 3 racing.

In 1976 and 1977 Porsche produced a total of 1237 930’s for the U.S. market and were badged “Turbo Carrera.”  These first generation pre-intercooler 930’s weighed 2641 lbs. making them 335 lbs. lighter than the last generation 1986-1988 Turbos that would weigh in at 2976 lbs.  With 260 hp and 253 lb-ft, many have said that they are the true essence of what Porsche was trying to capture in merging a race car with a high performance street car.

This particular numbers matching 930 Turbo Carrera is number 182 out of 717 produced for the U.S. in 1977, and is an excellent example of what collectors are searching for. With the odometer showing an accurate 39248 miles, the condition of this extremely low mileage, unmolested Turbo Carrera is impressive.  It has retained its original color combination of silver metallic paint along with its black leather interior. The paint shows beautifully on the car outlining the flared fenders and rear wing that has made the turbo iconic ever since. The interior shows little to no wear as to be expected in a very low mile Porsche.

The engine runs strong with even compression in all six cylinders and just passed California smog. The four speed manual transmission shifts smoothly with a driving impression as if it just came off of the show room floor. Everything in the car functions properly, from the sunroof to the cigarette lighter.

The originality of the car speaks volumes as can be seen with the spare tire with the correct date stamp. It comes with tools, jack, air compressor, which is still in its original box, books and a full compliment of literature.  Optional factory sport seats with the correct date stamp and a set of 15″ 8″x9″ factory optional wheels (refinished by world renowned Harvey Weidman) also with the correct date stamp, will compliment the sale of the Turbo Carrera.  This is a car for the serious collector.
